4 Tropical Islands You Need to Visit

 Pakhi Sen   June 23, 2017

Since I blog almost exclusively from tropical paradises I have seen and lived on some of the most beautiful islands on earth.

From the exotic shores of Bali to the peaceful beaches of Fiji I want to share 4 tropical islands you need to visit at least once in your lifetime.

I have spent at least a month on each one of these islands to get a feel for the place and to see what it feels like to actually live there for an extended period of time.

Whether you want to blow through for a week or set up home base as an expat here are 4 islands for you to consider.

1: Bali

Bali is unlike any other island on earth.

From its Hobbit-esque, tiny scale to rich culture which works its way into everyday life, The Island Of The Gods is a one of a kind place for both casual tourists and the full time digital nomad.

I have spent a year between multiple trips in Bali. Each time, the breathtaking beaches of the Bukit, peaceful ricefield scene around Ubud and the loving kindness of the Balinese people pull me in even more.

Kuta is a bit of a tourist trap but the Bukit beaches are a must see. Spend a few weeks living in the rice fields outside of Ubud to get a feel for authentic Balinese living.

If you want touristy mixed with a peaceful, local vibe, try Jimbaran. This fishing village offers you the best of both worlds in a beautiful setting.

2: Phuket

When you think Thailand beaches I bet you Phuket comes to mind.

For good reason.

This large, heavily touristed, beautiful island on the Andaman Sea is one of the most popular hot spots in all of Asia. Sure you have the mass tourist bit to deal with in Patong but if you head toward the southern part of the island – our fave community is Rawai – you will see a different Phuket.

Nai Harn Beach is a glorious beach with jaw-dropping views, a horseshoe-shaped cove surrounded by deep, lush jungle.

Make sure to take a motorbike ride across the mountainous backbone of the island for a movie-worthy view of the Andaman Sea as you drive by the cliff’s edge.

3: Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a gorgeous little island nestled on the Andaman Sea in Thailand.

Think “Phuket Light”. This place is Phuket’s little brother without the mass tourism and endless throngs of tourists.

Journey to the southern end of the island to see some of the most amazing beach scenery on earth, from dramatic cliff views to clear, clean, pristine water.

My wife and I enjoyed a private beach anytime we ventured beyond the common tourist hot spots.

Wildlife abounds here, from monkeys to 5 foot long monitor lizards to the dangerous but captivating cobra. Keep an eye out – and an ear out – for critters as you make your way around the island.

4: Vanua Levu

Vanua Levu is a charming, serene little island once voted the 2nd most peaceful island on earth.

After spending 4 months here a while back I see why.

We landed a house sit in Savusavu – called the hidden paradise of Fiji by Fijians – in a spot overlooking the bay.

Picture panoramic, postcard worthy views in all direction. Dramatic mountains, a peaceful, calm bay, lush green jungles and the most jaw-dropping views of the South Pacific you could ever imagine.

Note; Vanua Levu isn’t really a swimming or laying out beach destination due to small beaches and some rough coral and stony outcroppings in the shallows. This is more of a diving and snorkeling hot spot.

If you don’t mind appreciating the island’s stunning beauty and wading through the bay and ocean you will be A-OK.

What island is first on your list?
