An eight-mile long barrier island found off of the central west coast of Florida, Siesta Key is a little slice of paradise situated between Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Most tourists easily fall in love with the area, but you’ll also be pleased to know that the Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research Stephen P. Leatherman – aka “Dr. Beach” – recently crowned Siesta Key the nation’s best beach of his 2011 annual “Top Ten  Beaches” list!

Because it is 99% pure quartz, Siesta Key Beach is known for its powder – fine white sand, which stays cool to the touch no matter how hot the thermometer rises. It depends on who you ask, but Siesta Key’s sand has even been rumored to having “magical healing powers!” The beach’s clear blue water also attracts tourists and locals alike, and the area’s laid-back atmosphere is enough to make any vacation relaxing, whether it’s a weeklong retreat or a weekend getaway.

Even though the area’s beaches are award winners, there are plenty of fun things to do in Siesta Key besides swim and sunbathe. If you’re an animal-lover, be sure to keep your eyes and ears open at all times during your vacation! Be on the lookout for offshore dolphins and manatees if you decide to take a boat charter, since they’re often spotted in the gulf and bay. A wide variety of birds call Siesta Key home as well, and bird-watching is a popular activity. Wild parrots, terns, plovers, ibis, spoonbills, and storks are abundant, as are the 4 to 5-foot tall Florida sand hill cranes. Their distinctive red heads are absolutely gorgeous, and you’ll typically see the cranes in pairs of two since they mate for life. Be sure to bring your camera!
